Enjoy that school. A word of advice for GCI: bring air fresheners for classes on the 4th floor. The summer (and beginning of fall) brings an odd smell to the aptly named "curry level".

You did it man. Bring your level of excellence to the classroom and let the students see what things like attitude and perseverance can get them.

I like your thinking. Just listened to This Week In Tech where they had some concerns about this. The people doing this documentary have not allowed financial audit and seem to be keeping almost all of the funds raised to support their organization. The video is a re edit of 2006 film and the large number of hits could be the result of a robot. In any event very few people to go there watch the entire 30 minutes. This could be a good lesson in propaganda for students, but it looks like smart people putting out a video gone viral to make a lot of money. It reminds some of Michael More's work. Keep up the good work.

You raise several more interesting points, Royan. Thanks for your thoughtful comment.

The 'post-colonial hue' is ever-present and worth naming and unpacking. The juxtaposition of the #Kony2012 video and other documentaries that you suggest would make for a worthwhile exercise.

I agree wholeheartedly that joining the campaign while 'maintaining a critical eye' is extremely difficult, if not, impossible. I hope that my comments above didn't appear to endorse this option. Though a part of me might like to flatly dismiss the campaign, I was simply trying to sort out the reservations I had about discouraging student participation.

Despite the many challenges, my belief is that we CAN guide students toward the conclusion that Invisible Children has it wrong, but they need to discover it and own it. The problem, of course, is the idealistic tendencies I referred to and the inexperience/"lack of historical context" you rightly identified. How many will really do the leg-work to ensure the film is not misleading them? As such, if we have encountered reputable sources exposing inaccuracies during our own quest for understanding, it makes perfect sense to make them known to our students.

Thanks again for stimulating even more thought on this subject.

Excellent point, Alex. We're forever attempting to guide research behaviours and instruct students in the important task of evaluating web sources. Our hope, of course, is that these practices will become second nature and will be applied to all media they encounter online, etc. but this campaign allows for yet another opportunity to connect this 'academic' behaviour to their 'real world'. Thanks for the comment.
